The Changement Of The Workplace And Self-Employment

It wasn’t that long ago when people could get a 9 to 5 job and expect to stay at the same place of work for the majority of their working life. Ever since the recession companies have become more proactive in looking for ways to reduce their overheads and financial responsibility towards their workforce. This has given rise to far more specialist recruitment contracts and short-term appointments. Some companies have also been stretching the definition of self-employment as far as they can, to reduce their responsibility towards employees. What’s driving these changes?

Survival Of The Flexible

In an ever-fluctuating environment like the world economy, the companies that thrive are the ones capable of expanding and contracting when required. The ideal situation for them is a small core of permanent employees with a large network of people they can call upon as needed.

While having less responsibility towards temporary employees, whether they are on a short-term contract or self employed, might reduce the risks and potential costs to a business, it also reduces the security and stability of the employees.

We have seen this issue play out all over Europe. New regulations have been brought in to try to combat companies treating employees with complete disregard. Ireland’s own employment code of practice needs to continue to evolve to keep serving a changing landscape. Failure to keep up will lead to the appearance of more loopholes companies will exploit at the expense of employees.
